Overview

Come From Away is the hit Broadway musical that tells the extraordinary true story of kindness, community, and hope in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Come From Away, a musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein

At a time when the world seemed divided by fear and uncertainty, thousands of strangers discovered the power of community, generosity, and friendship in the unlikeliest of places.

Based on actual events, Come From Away recounts the story of 38 commercial airliners carrying nearly 7,000 passengers that were unexpectedly grounded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, when U.S. airspace was closed following the terrorist attacks on 9/11. As travelers from around the globe found themselves stranded and anxious about loved ones and unfolding events, the residents of Gander responded with remarkable hospitality, opening their homes, schools, churches, and community centers to complete strangers.

Through an uplifting score inspired by Celtic and folk traditions, Come From Away brings to life the humor, heart, and humanity that emerged during a moment of profound tragedy. The musical celebrates the countless acts of kindness that reminded people around the world that compassion can endure even in the darkest circumstances.

In an era often marked by division, Come From Away offers a timely reminder that our shared humanity is stronger than our differences, and that the simple act of caring for another person can change lives.
