Staniar Gallery opens its fall season with "FERAL (A History of Art)," a solo exhibition by Josh T Franco, on view September 4 through October 9, 2026. Franco gives an artist's talk on Monday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall.

Franco's primary medium is art history itself. He holds a doctorate in the field and has worked in it for close to twenty years, making work for galleries and museums while also writing and lecturing as a scholar. He treats studio practice as a form of research, on the same footing as archival work or field study.

The work moves across drawing, painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation, sound, and performance, taking up figures from Erwin Panofsky to Georgia O'Keeffe. The studio gives him a space outside the disciplining pull of art history, and the version of that history that comes out of it is a feral one.

Franco studied art history at Southwestern University and holds a master's and doctorate in the field from Binghamton University. His work has been shown and supported internationally, including at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the Addison Gallery of American Art, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, where he was the NEH Innovator in Residence for 2025 to 2026.

The exhibition is curated by Katja Rivera, curator of contemporary art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, working with the artist.

Admission and hours

The exhibition and the artist's talk are both free and open to the public. The artist's talk will be at 5:30 on September 22. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, when campus is open to visitors.
