Legacy of Geoffrey S. Berg
1951-2023
Geoffrey S. Berg was a professor, photographer, and supporter of the arts. Upon his death in 2023, Berg donated his photographs--showcasing his talent over many years and in many locations--to the Buena Vista Arts Council, of which he was an avid supporter.
“At this time," he said, "I am gifting my photography as a funding effort for The Buena Vista Arts Council that has...had a mission that parallels my own."
Continuing in the tradition Berg began, the BVAC has shared his work by installing beautiful canvas prints in both public and commercial spaces in and around Buena Vista and Rockbridge County. As per his wishes, BVAC also offers many of Berg's prints for sale, with profits benefitting the Council's many programs that promote arts in the community.
A Passion for Photography and Philanthropy
In 1964, at the young age of 13, Geoffrey was loaned a camera and 2 rolls of black and white film by the NYC based magazine Popular Photography. Thus began a lifelong hobby that would amass a huge catalog of images from landscapes to cityscapes, and classic and sports cars, which he especially enjoyed. Geoffrey had many of his frameworthy images made into canvas prints which he offered for sale.
Upon his passing, Geoffrey willed all of his photography, both printed and digital, to the Buena Vista Arts Council, in the hopes that the sale of his work would benefit the community. His father had encouraged him to
“At this time I am gifting my photography as a funding effort for The Buena Vista Arts Council that has, for 5
years, had a mission that parallels my own. I offer this with special thanks to Sterling, whom I am honored to
say is a friend, and a man for all seasons. And my wife who has stood by me and brings joy each day.
“Two years ago, I had this vision of hanging beautiful landscape artwork in the Fitness Center Locker Room but wasn't sure how we were going to get there.
Like divine intervention, two weeks ago, I met Resident and Photographer Geoffrey Berg and had one of those meant to be moments.
Talking with Geoffrey was such a delight, you can instantly see his passion for photography and bringing life to spaces. His work can be seen in The Lexington Chamber of Commerce and in 'Art in the Windows' in Buena Vista. And now we are fortunate enough to be able to see his art here at Kendal in the Fitness Center. Geoffrey donated the most beautiful pieces and has brightened up our spaces beyond what I ever could have dreamed of.
Thank you, Geoffrey, for your generosity!
Sincerely,
Victoria Forman-KaLex Fitness Manager”
